The TCA Safety Professional of the Year, the Clare C. Casey Award was presented this past week to one of TCA's outstanding safety professionals during the TCA Safety and Security Division meting in Indianapolis. This award is a time honored tradition of the Safety & Security Division, an award that exemplifies what this industry is all about, delivering goods on time and safely. In that essence, it is our safety people that genuinely go unnoticed throughout their careers and this award program was developed to honor that person who truly exemplifies a career devoted to improving safety. One who not only assures that their driver's load is delivered on time, but also provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to make sure that same driver arrives back home to his or her family, safe and sound. In that spirit, this safety advocate award honors someone whose actions and achievements have had a profound and positive contribution to the TCA Safety and Security Division and has been an advocate for safety. As TCA Chairman, Jim O'Neal, President, O & S Trucking, Inc. states, "we must keep our fingers on the pulse of every driver."

By way of background, Clare Casey was a member of the TCA staff over 20 years ago and was instrumental in creating the Safety Council from the grassroots up. Clare soon after was diagnosed with cancer and later succumbed to the disease in 1989.

The judges this year said that the competition was very tough and many were happy that they were not competing against the crop of nominations that were received. In fact, there were some years that the award was not given out, due to the lack of qualified candidates that submitted applications for the award; however, this year was the exact opposite. There were thirteen nominations submitted and all were very deserving. In the end though, after much deliberations, the past recipients of the award and also the judges made their selection.

Clark GrayThis year's winner was Clark Gray of P.A.M. Transport, Inc. of Tontitown, Arkansas and the Safety & Security Division Chairman. Clark has been with P.A.M.
